In a paper published in Nature Geoscience, Julia Cisneros and Jim Best, with a team of international collaborators, have presented the first comprehensive look at what lies at the bottom of the world’s great sand-bed rivers. This work, using a range of high-resolution bathymetric surveys and a new analytical methodology, called ‘BAMBI, reveals the shape of sand dunes, and illustrates how they are typically far lower angle that often assumed. The paper highlights the significance of this for the management of contemporary channels, such as flood routing and flood height predictions, as well as how we interpret the deposits of such dunes in the ancient sedimentary record.
