Large-scale environmental stresses in big rivers: it’s not all about climate change

Anthropogenic stressors have a large influence on modern rivers.

In a paper in the Cell Press journal One Earth, Jim Best and colleague Steve Darby show how multiple stresses are challenging the functioning of the world’s great rivers, and emphasize how it is essential to understand the timescales on which these stressors operate. The paper highlights how many of these stresses act on a shorter time scale than climate change induced stresses, and that these must be prioritized in ongoing management strategies and efforts to meet some of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Large rivers, like the one pictured here, are reacting on shorter time-scales than previously though.
